DARTS - Groves wins Christmas singles knockout tournament

Bromsgrove Editorial 22nd Dec, 2021   0

STEVE Groves won Bromsgrove Darts League’s second Christmas singles knockout tournament with a 4-3 win against George Willetts in the final.

Groves raced into a three-leg lead in the final only for Willetts to produce a stunning comeback and take the game to a deciding leg.

However, Groves hit bigger scores in the seventh and final leg to clinch victory.

The competition took place at Catshill Social Club and began with 32 players which was then whittled down to 16 before the quarter-finals.

And the quarter-final matches were played best of five legs with Groves and Willetts joined in the semi-finals by Dave Honey and Paul Wallace.

Groves (Red Lion) then eased past Honey (Droitwich WMC) 3-1 before Willetts (Crown Inn) edged out Wallace (Droitwich WMC) 3-2 in a fifth leg decider.

That set up a final showdown between Groves and Willetts played over the best of seven legs.

And Groves won the opening leg before starting with a 180 on his way to taking the second leg.

The eventual winner needed just one more leg after winning the third only for Willetts to respond in style.

Willetts won the crucial fourth leg before starting with a 140 and then hitting a 180 to take the fifth leg.

And a remarkable 100 checkout saw Willetts take the final to a deciding leg which was won by the Red Lion’s Groves in a close encounter.
