CRICKET - Bromsgrove begin season with narrow win against Worfield

BROMSGROVE CC began their Birmingham and District Premier Cricket League campaign with a five-run victory against Worfield CC.

The Boars scored 205 from 49.5 overs before bowling out Wormley for 200 in 45.3 overs to clinch a narrow victory.

Captain Jayden Levitt top scored with the bat for Bromsgrove with 40 from 49 balls whilst Ashley Newfield hit a useful 29 and Lucas Ingram scored 26.

Wicket keeper Alex Milton was the only other batsman to reach 20 runs or more with 24 as Bromsgrove slipped from 175-6 to 205 all out, losing the final four wickets for just 30 runs.




However, Bromsgrove impressed with the ball as two early wickets restricted Worfield to 19-2 before the home side rallied to 96-4.

The Boars looked set for a comfortable victory when three quick wickets from Will Tuffin and the crucial scalp of Will Cook left Worfield on 137-7.


But Worfield refused to lie down as their lower order picked away at Bromsgrove’s total before Alex Wilkinson claimed the wicket of Ryan Quiney caught behind by Milton.

Tuffin (3-47) and Wilkinson (3-38) were the pick of the Bromsgrove bowlers with Freddie Fallows (2-25), Gareth Williams (1-27) and Ashley Newfield (1-20) also amongst the wickets.

Elsewhere, the club’s 2nd XI suffered a six-wicket defeat against Astwood Bank CC in Division Two of the Worcestershire County League.

Bromsgrove scored 199-8 from their 50 overs are were just pipped to the post by the visitors who reached the target with three balls to spare.

And the club’s 3rd XI suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Lye CC’s 2nd XI after they were bowled out for a measly 119 in just 36.3 overs in Division Four of the Worcestershire County League.

Harry Smith scored a highly impressive 73 for Bromsgrove and was one of just two batters to reach double figures as Lye chased down the total in 26.3 overs.

Lastly, Bromsgrove’s 4th XI lost by seven wickets to Oldswinford CC in Division Seven of the Worcestershire County League.

Thomas Hope’s 40 was the highlight of Bromsgrove’s innings as they finished on 133-8 from their 45 overs with their opponents reaching the total for the loss of three wickets in 32.3 overs.

Bromsgrove are next in action at home to Lichfield CC on Saturday, April 23 with the game due to start at midday at St. Godwalds Park.
