BROMSGROVE Sporting’s under-9’s girls’ team will have a special visitor for their home game against Droitwich Spa on Saturday, March 16.

Coun Sam Ammar, chairman of Bromsgrove District Council, will be in attendance to support the team in a crunch local derby.

And under-9’s team manager Craig Robinson is still looking for players to join his 12-strong squad.

Robinson said: “When we first started, we had five girls for the under-9’s, we were desperately struggling each week to field a seven-a-side team.

“It’s taken a long time but we’ve managed to build a squad of 12 players, we want to get as many girls in as we can.

“It’s a great way for girls to become involved with sport, especially football with the way women’s football is going with the Lionesses.

“The reason I became involved is because my daughter wanted to play, I started helping out and I’ve ended up managing the under-9’s.

“We are looking for players at all age groups, we hope they can join and progress all the way up to the senior women’s team.

“We’ve only got three teams at the moment but depending on how many girls become involved determines how many teams we can put together.

“We’re looking to put a structure in place where players can join and eventually feed into the women’s team.”

Sporting’s head of women and girls football, Alan Williams, added: “All the girls teams have steadily progressed under the guidance of our FA qualified coaches.

“We have also set up an FA wildcats centre which is for girls aged from five to 11 and an FA squad girls centre for girls aged between 12 and 16-years-old which runs on a Monday evening in Bromsgrove.

“Recently we have also been awarded sponsorship through the Bromsgrove District Council and the Levelling Up initiative which is funded by the government.

“We are planning to run further teams next year and are looking for coaches to run the new side’s and players at all ages.”
