BROMSGROVE Sporting continued their fine pre-season form with a professional 3-0 victory at Northern Premier Division One South outfit Romulus.
Fresh off the back of Wednesday night’s 12-0 victory over Chelmsley Town, goals from Ben Birch, Reece Hewitt and John Pykett ensured Paul Smith’s men walked away with a victory in Sutton Coldfield.
Despite their physical presence, Romulus offered very little against a Sporting side which, barring the odd moment, looked very solid at the back.
Within the first five minutes the visitors should have been 1-0 up as Wade Malley raced through on goal but his effort aimed for the bottom right-hand corner was clawed away by Leighton Smith in the Romulus goal.
Malley again had a chance to nose Sporting ahead in the 27th minute but he could only curl his shot well wide of the mark following some good hold-up play by Hewitt.
But five minutes later the scoreline was eventually broken as Spink’s deep in-swinging corner was met by an unmarked Birch at the back post who made no mistake from two yards out.
That proved to be the last of the key action in the first half but three minutes after the interval Sporting doubled their lead when Hewitt powerfully headed home substitute Chrisi Conway’s pin-point cross.
Although keeper Smith got a hand to the effort, all he could do was push the ball onto the bar and into the net.
And two minutes later the net was bulging again.
A wonderful throughball from Jack Wilson set Robbie Bunn free but his shot beyond the advancing Smith looked to be going wide.
However, there was Pykett busting a gut to reach the ball at the far post where he could tap into an unguarded net.
Sporting continued to push a fourth but Romulus will consider themselves unlucky not to get on the scoresheet with 11 minutes remaining as Liam Hailey came agonisingly close to getting a toe on the end of a whipped in cross from the right.
With two minutes of normal time remaining Conway came close to making it 4-0 but like Hailey, he could not provide the killer touch to Keenan Meakin-Richards’ drilled cross.
Up next for Sporting is an away trip to Boldmere-based Paget Rangers (7.45pm KO).
