Brunt effort in vain for Avoncroft

Bromsgrove Editorial 6th Sep, 2019   0

A TOP score of 68 by Alex Brunt was not enough to guide Avoncroft to victory, after falling to a seven-wicket loss at Rushwick in Worcestershire County League Division Three.

Wayne Newman was a thorn in The Croft’s side, taking five dismissals as the visitors were dismissed for 183, allowing Rushwick to earn a straightforward win in the 35th over.

There were contrasting fortunes for Avoncroft’s openers to start proceedings, with Josh Cound (6) dismissed cheaply, while Brunt battled on to establish a solid foundation of runs for his side to build on.

He was joined by number three Steve Eastham (44) to build the score further, but the dismissals of both led to a disappointing downfall, despite unbeaten Ben Warwick (30no) staying the course of the innings at number four.

None of the Croft’s remaining batting order were able to reach double figures, as Newman (5-46) chipped away at the middle-to-late order, to leave the visitors with a disappointing total of 183 to defend.

Rushwick openers Dan Metcalfe (56) and Duncan Cooper (44) added to Avoncroft’s woes, though Anthony Pittam (3-37) did at least provide a highlight when bowling the pair and number three Phil Hamilton (13).

Unfortunately for Pittam and the Croft, the unbeaten pairing of Jason Andrews (14no) and Paul Wyatt (37no) had more than enough runs in them, and overs left to bat, to fire the hosts to a resounding victory.

Avoncroft stay seventh despite the loss, ahead of their penultimate game of the season at Pershore Seconds on Saturday (12.30pm).
