BROMSGROVE Sporting’s under-16s capped off an impressive season by securing a league and cup double after lifting the Worcestershire FA Saturday Cup with a 3-0 victory over West Hagley.
With only one loss and one draw for the season, the mini Rouslers had already clinched the Central Warwickshire Youth League U18s Division One to gain promotion to the Premier Division.
And nerves were high on Saturday at Bewdley Town’s Ribbesford Meadow as Sporting went into their final against a strong Hagley side.
Hagley started the first half well as they hit the post early doors before forcing a number of good saves out of Sporting keeper Jack Pinfield.
The Rouslers responded to the pressure though with some good defending and counter attacking.
Nick Jones switched play to James Webster who crossed for Tom Smith to make it 1-0 with a sweeping finish.
Sporting continued to dominate but could not add to their tally before the interval.
After the break it took just three minutes for Sporting to double their advantage as Smith pinched the ball off the opposition before turning the ball onto his left foot and finding the bottom corner from the edge of the area.
Jones and man-of-the-match Curt Smith were impressive in the Sporting midfield, breaking up Hagley’s play and finding good passes to start the attacks.
And with some very good build-up play, it was 3-0 as Evan Houghton followed up the rebound after seeing his initial shot well saved.
Moments later the referee blew for full time as the Rouslers clinched their league and cup double.
Sporting are on the look-out for new players for next season’s under-18 team and must be going into Year 12 and Year 13 at school.
