BROMSGROVE Sporting Colts under-16s side lifted the Worcestershire FA County Cup on Saturday, after edging Kidderminster Harriers 1-0 in the final.
Playing at Evesham United’s Jubilee Stadium, it was Alex Quaynor’s second-minute strike which proved the difference between the two sides, following a well-fought contest.
Sporting had to dig in to get themselves over the finishing line, and had goalkeeper Hugh McGowan to thank for keeping out a Kidderminster penalty ten minutes from time.
Even after the penalty miss, Harriers continued to press the Colts, but they were able to hold on to lift the trophy.
Coaches Andy McGowan & Martin Phelan said: “It was a great family day for everyone involved, and the players have earned their success with nine months of hard work.”
Colts current under-16s side move up to the MJPL next season to play under-18s football, and are appealing for new players to join the club.
Anyone that is interested in joining the Colts are asked to contact Andy on 07778 515305.
Colts’ under-18s recorded a cup final win of their own, lifting the Central Warwickshire Youth Football League Presidents Shield, after beating North Birmingham Celtic 3-1.
Bromsgrove controlled the early proceedings, and went two goals up, before netting a third in the final ten minutes, with Connor Ruston, Chris Geraghty and Niall Doherty all scoring for the Colts.
It means they stay on course to lift a potential treble, having already won Division 2 this season, and will seal a trophy-laden season with victory over Meadow Park in Sunday’s WFA Sunday Under 18s Cup final (1pm), held at Bewdley Town’s Ribbesford Meadows ground.
Elsewhere, in the Central Warwickshire Girls U17 Premier League, Colts under-17s girls side finished off their campaign with a title decider, but their 2-2 draw against Alvis Juniors condemned Sporting to settle for runners-up.
