BROMSGROVE School student Hannah Sahota helped guide the Hereford & Worcestershire Intermediate Girls team to third place at the ESAA National Combined Events Track and Field Championships.

Sahota was joined by Danielle Hopkins (The Chase School, Malvern) and Emma Sherwood (Hagley RC High School) for the event held at the Bedford International Stadium over the weekend.

The girls were competing in seven events across the two days of competition, scoring points for their performances, which add up to a team total for three competitors.

After a steady start in the sprint hurdles, H&W soon showed their potential after their high jump points when they nudged ahead of Hampshire into third.

By the end of day one they 200 points clear of them.

The long jump consolidated H&W’s position but they knew the javelin could potentially change things going into the final event (800m).

Hopkins and Sherwood pulled out PBs in the javelin, with Sahota’s throw her best in a combined events competition.

Having maintained a very narrow lead, H&W were determined to give their all in the last event and tactically ran brilliant races to secure their team podium place, eventually finishing 500 points ahead of Hampshire.

Hopkins was the eighth placed individual competitor among the 43 athletes.

Her heptathlon points total of 4,617 was a massive personal best.

Sherwood finished 13th and Sahota finished 31st, giving their team an overall total of 12,652 points.
