BROMSGROVE School hosted and excelled at a pairs fencing event at Winterfold School recently, where the school were represented by four pairs of fencers.

The event, intended to teach competitive pairs fencing to pupils in a friendly atmosphere, was contested by 32 fencers in all from nine different schools over the course of 206 fights.

Year 7 pair Leo Boonnak and Oliver Gowan won the under-14 foil, with Year 6 pairing George Ascough and Jasper Page ranking as runners-up.

The young duo of Amina Muldasheva (Year 3) and Priya Giles (Year 4) battled on against older opponents to achieve a well-earned third place in their pool, while in the over 14 épée event Artem Veprev and Yann Meister finished third.

It was a particularly impressive feat, considering that Meister had only taken up the sport at the beginning of the academic year, but received excellent guidance in the form of Veprev – who ranked 29th in the U18 boys épée at the British Youth Championships at the start of May.

The trio of Tatiana Morikova, Elsa Tsia and Ascough also appeared at the aforementioned Championships, with Morikova coming 27th in the U18 girls épée, Tsia 44th in the U16 girls event and Ascough 32nd in the U12 boys equivalent.
