BROMSGROVE Men’s D managed to secure promotion from Division Six East of the Herefordshire & Worcestershire League with a 6-0 victory over Halesowen.

With other results going against them, Bromsgrove needed a maximum points victory to claim the runners-up spot.

The match started well as all three pairs of Aaron Oakes with George Rogers, Max Feltham with Bruce Turner and Chris Hands with Mel mcGregor all winning comfortably in two sets.

The change round brought some closer contests with Hands and McGregor being pushed to a tie break before running out winners in two sets.

With both pairs winning well, it gave Bromsgrove the points they need to pip Manor Park and Bewdley to promotion.

Captain McGregor was full of praise for his squad and added: “We really needed to focus for this one and the whole team came up with the goods when it mattered.

“It’s been great seeing Aaron and George really progress as match players and claim the number one spot in the team and for the whole squad to show the resilience needed in some tough matches.”

The Ladies E team consolidated their Division Seven East status with a vital 4-2 victory over Ombersley C.

Claire Hancock with Sue Corfield playing at pair three proved to be the heroes as they beat Ombersley’s second and third pairs.

Avril Pugh with Yvonne Priestman and Claire Carter with Di Horton each lost to Omberlsey’s first pair but beat their second.

In the same division, the Ladies D team boosted their hopes of challenging for promotion with a 5-1 victory over basement club Blakedown.

This was a great result for Bromsgrove as Alison Douglas and Priestman made the step-up from the E team to win both of their contests.

Catherine Maund and Sue Forrest also won twice while Jane Corbett and Carol Cornelissen added a further win.

Victory means Bromsgrove are just behind league leaders Fladbury who have competed their season.

Should the D team beat Ombersley C in their next match, the season-ending clash against second placed Pershore C will be a promotion decider.

Elsewhere, there wasn’t any good news for the Men’s E team in Division Eight East as they went down 5-1 to rivals Droitwich D.

The only Bromsgrove rubber was won by the junior pairing of Charlie Tait with Dan Andrews.
