BROMSGROVE’S Men’s D team suffered a 4-2 defeat to Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer League Division Five East promotion favourites Wall Heath B.
Twelve-year-old Cameron Owen was called up from the G team at the last minute to partner Trevor Errington but the duo went down 6-1, 6-0 as they struggled to combine.
It was all change in the second rubber, however, as they came through a marathon to win 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 and earn two valuable points.
Brothers Michael and Peter Petrakis also combined to win a tough three-set battle 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.
At first pair Dan Andrews with George Rogers fought hard but could not quite overcome the strong opposition pairs.
After the match captain Errington said: “The hero of the night was Cameron.
“He showed great maturity and skill after stepping in at the last minute and is a real asset to the club.”
The Men’s B team were beaten 4-2 in a tight Division Two encounter against Stourbridge C.
Voitek Niedzwiedz with Jeth Tomlinson opened with a good win and Phil Boardman with Steve Jones took the other rubber.
The defeat means that after promotion last year there is a possibility of going back down.
Elsewhere, the Men’s E came away with a 4-2 victory at local rivals Ombersley B in Division Eight East.
