BROMSGROVE Ladies A came flying out of the traps in their opening Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League Division One clash as they defeated Manor Park A 3-1.

Imogen Sinclair with Jilly Witcomb continued on from their strong summer form, winning both of their rubbers while Tina Manning with Sally Franks beat their second pair before losing a close battle to the first pair in two sets.

Not to be outdone, the Ladies B team kicked off their Division Two campaign with an outstanding 4-0 victory over local rivals David Lloyd Bromsgrove A.

The team of Katherine Smedley with Meg Jones and Hannah Weston with Kelly Kenward were on top form as they brushed aside the opposition in a dominant display.

The Ladies C team also enjoyed opening day success as they overcame neighbours Droitwich B 3-1 in Division Four East.

Joan McGregor with Debbie Oliver pushed the opposition first pair all the way before going down while Ann Banner with Di Wilson claimed victories.

The only glitches for the Bromsgrove’s Ladies’ teams was the G side went down 4-0 to a strong Barnt Green B in Division Ten East while the F team lost 3-1 at Belbroughton in their first Division Nine East game – Alison Douglas and Carol Cornellisen took the only rubber.

It was not such a strong start for the Men’s A as they started their winter Division One matches with a 4-0 defeat to the summer champions Manor Park A.

It was a baptism of fire for new player Wladimir Bykowszczenko and former B team player Ollie Stratford who were no match for a strong Manor Park.

The newly-promoted Men’s C opened their Division Five East season against Cookley A.

A close contest saw the first pair of John Casey with Tim Wright beat their opposite pair in three sets before cruising past the second pair.

Voitek Niedzwiedz with Tim Roland beat the opposite second pair, dropping only a couple of games while another tight encounter saw them go down in a tie break in the last set against the Cookley first pair.

Finally, in Division Eight East, the Men’s E team were beaten on bonus points by Cutnall Green B.

Both pairs of Max Feltham with Chris Hands and Jim Round with Dan Andrews each won a rubber to make it 2-2.

However, Cutnall Green took the bonus win points by virtue of winning an extra set.

The highlight for Bromsgrove was juniors Round and Andrews fighting back and showing great maturity to win a crucial three-set victory in their final contest.
