Bromsgrove Ladies F thump Ombersley D to go top of the table

A STRAIGHT 4-0 victory for the Bromsgrove Ladies F team at Ombersley D sent them top of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League Division Ten East table.

In what was their third win of the season to remain unbeaten, Bromsgrove put in a commanding display without dropping a single set.

Opening up Di Horton with partner Claire Hancock – fresh from winning the accolade of most improved lady player at the club presentation evening last Friday – cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win while Alison Douglas with Carol Cornelissen also had an impressive 6-2, 6-1 success.

Ombersley rallied in the second round but Horton and Hancock won 6-4, 6-2 while Douglas and Cornelissen claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win to wrap up a great day for Bromsgrove.

Captain Hancock said: “To start the season with three good wins has buoyed everyone up and we’re really thinking about promotion now.

“If we continue playing as well as did I’m sure we’ll be in contention at the end of the season.”

The Division Four East win for the Men’s C team against Hagley A was a much tighter affair.

The first round did not go the way of Bromsgrove as the new pairing of John Casey with Tim Roland went down 2-6,4-6.

And the other new pairing of Max Feltham with junior debutant Stu Shannon fought out a tense three-set battle only to lose the final set 3-6.

After the turn around Feltham and Shannon had another three-set epic but this time took the final set 6-4 for a good win.

Unfortunately for Hagley a withdrawal due to illness handed the final rubber to Bromsgrove to give them the bonus win points by 48 games to 41 with rubbers and sets level.

Elsewhere, the Ladies C were beaten 3-1 in their opening Division Four East clash at Beckford A.

Debbie Oliver and Claudia Bullock picked up the only rubber with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
