BROMSGROVE Ladies D claimed back-to-back promotions in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League with a 3-1 victory over Droitwich C.
In a Division Six East fixture which went to three sets in all rubbers, Bromsgrove dug in and showed why they are the champions with a great fighting display.
The opening round finished 2-0 as Lisa Rushton with Lorraine Russell won 6-4 in their final set while Connie Wedelich with Anne Simper won convincingly 6-1 in their final set.
It didn’t look promising at the start of the second round as Droitwich took both the opening sets.
However, Rushton and Russell won a tight second set on a tie break before powering home 6-3 in the final set to guarantee a Bromsgrove victory.
Wedelich and Simper also fought back to take the second set but were just pipped 7-5 in the final set.
After the match Simper said: “To get back to back promotions is a fantastic achievement for the squad who have supported each other well over the last two seasons.
“This was a tough division as the battle against one of the lower teams showed and to win by a clear margin is a real achievement.
“We’re looking forward to making it a hat-trick of promotions next year.”
The Men’s B team had the narrowest of wins away at Stourbridge in Division Three East.
Each pair of Phil Boardman with Steve Jones and Jeth Tomlinson with Matt Smith had convincing two-set wins against the opposition second pair, but came unstuck against the first pair.
With the match score even on rubbers and sets won, Bromsgrove took the win 31-30 on games won.
The result means they consolidate third place.
It was a quiet finish to the season for the Men’s F team in Division 11 East as they went down 3-1 to mid-table Stourport C.
Rob Kindon and Mark Wilson picked up the single win for Bromsgrove.
Elsewhere, it was bad news for the Mixed B team who lost 3-1 at Belbroughton and face relegation from Division Three East.
