THE HEREFORDSHIRE and Worcestershire Summer League Division One title will be decided on the final day of the season following Bromsgrove Ladies A’s 6-0 victory over Stourbridge B.

Bromsgrove will take on Pershore A knowing a victory will mean they overtake current leaders Stourbridge A who have finished their fixture schedule.

Victory of Stour’s B side started with Jilly Witcomb with Katherine Smedley at first pair who fought out two tough three-set battles.

They came back in both matches after losing the opening set to win and set the foundations for victory.

Sally Franks with Tina Manning and Rachael Mack with Hannah Weston then both had two set wins.

Captain Franks said: “It was a tough match but Jilly and Katherine showed real grit to fight back and secure important victories to set us up for a showdown with Pershore.

“Although a couple of key players will be unavailable for that match I think our fighting spirit will give us the edge.”

In Division Five East, the Men’s C team completed their season with a comfortable 6-0 victory over Belbroughton B to consolidate a mid-table finish.

However, it consigned the D team who lost a tight match against Worcester D 2-4 to relegation.

The C pairs of John Casey with Tim Wright, Tim Roland with Pete Morris and Max Feltham with Jack Walters all won in two sets.

At Worcester, Dave Brace with Ethan Oakes and Matt Smith with Dan Andrews won a rubber each.

Although the Mixed B team lost a tight match against Evesham, they did enough to secure their Division Three East status for another season.

With Beccy Smith and Luke Petit winning two rubbers the match ended 2-2 and 5-5 in sets as Jim Round with Steph Armstrong managed to win vital sets in the close matches they lost.

However, the count-back on games gave Evesham the victory.

Captain Smith said: “I’m really pleased that after a tough season we have retained our place in the division despite having to field a lot of different players.”
