TWO Bromsgrove athletes were part of the 23-strong Hereford and Worcestershire Schools team at the English Schools National Track & Field Championships.

After impressing during district, county and club competitions, Will Thorley, from South Bromsgrove High School, and Sam Jones, from North Bromsgrove High School, were selected to compete in the championships at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.

The national event, which involves 45 counties, is one of the most prestigious in the schools’ athletics calendar, and is the fourth largest athletics event in the world.

Thorley found success in the senior boys’ 400m hurdles event with a personal best time of 55.90, but fell just short of a podium place after placing in fourth.

In the intermediate boys’ 200m race, Jones raced home in a time of 22.24 to finish fifth, just 0.34 seconds away from a podium place.

Nathan Biggs, of North Bromsgrove High School, had also been scheduled to compete in the event, but missed out on his second National Championships following a last-minute injury.

The Hereford and Worcestershire team returned with a gold medal after a combined team score of 53 points, almost double their 2018 tally, in the final tournament at the Alexander Stadium before refurbishment gets under way ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
