Ben Tyler 2nd Aug, 2019

BROMSGROVE A furthered their chances of finishing in the top two with a 10-4 victory over Worcester A in Women’s Division One of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer League.

The duo of Sally Franks and Katherine Smedley got proceedings underway for the visitors, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 against Worcester pairing Caron Crawford and Amelia Short, though Gemma Calthorpe and Rebecca Smith were on the wrong end of a 6-2, 6-0 scoreline in match two.

The balance of the tie continued to swing, as Bromsgrove’s Claudia Bullock and Kelly Kenward won 6-1, 6-1 against Lucy Short and Judy Hawken, before the same partnership lost 7-6, 6-4 to Worcester’s Crawford and Amelia Short.

But Bromsgrove took control of the tie and saw out the match with two victories in the final two matches, winning 6-3, 6-1 through Franks and Smedley, before Calthorpe and Smith claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win to round off the tie.

Bromsgrove remain third on 46 points, four behind second-placed Stourbridge A.

In Division Two, David Lloyd Bromsgrove A stepped up their top-three challenge by beating Stourbridge C 10-4.

DL Bromsgrove duo Clare Dunlop and Wendy Goodhill won their opener 6-4, 6-2, before Deborah Pegler and Wendy Supperstone lost 6-3, 6-4.

But from there, the visitors from Bromsgrove won the following three matches to storm into the lead.

Karen Swindells and Elisabeth Johnston winning 6-1, 6-2 against Jayne Eaton and Wendy Musk, followed up by a 6-3, 6-3 win against Eleanor Taylor and Pat Warren, while Dunlop and Goodhill beat Valerie Molineux and Laura Molineux 6-1, 6-1.

Supperstone and Pegler lost the final match 7-6, 6-2, though it did little to blemish a fine performance from the visitors, who are four points off third place Bewdley A.
