BROMSGROVE & REDDITCH Athletic Club’s senior track and field team have increased their lead at the top of Midland League Division Four following Saturday’s match at Corby.

B&R once again won the fixture amongst the seven clubs, giving themselves maximum points from the two matches completed and, with two fixtures remaining, they are now in a strong position to make a return to Division Three.

A somewhat depleted team, particularly on the women’s side, made the trip to Corby, but on the day B&R showed they had enough strength in depth to beat the other clubs.

Leading the way for B&R were ‘A’ event victories for Dave Mould (400m 51.1), Joe Smith who chalked up an easy win in the 3,000m with a new personal best of 9:05.6 and a superb leap of 5.71m by Jo Frost to win the women’s long jump event in addition to setting a new club record.

Along with the individual event winners, there were a number of athletes clocking up high points tallies across a number of events who were instrumental in securing victory on the day for the club.

One such athlete was Sam Moran who competed across no less than seven events to collect a great individual points tally.

The mentality of stepping in at the late notice was also epitomised by the likes of Tom Richardson who competed strongly for the club in the long jump after the 800m, along with Andy Freeman and Martin Aspley-Davis who as usual picked up points for the club across a wide range of events.

In addition to athletes competing in unfamiliar events, there were some other strong performances in other events for the club.

Sam Cater and Rich O’Connor placed highly across all throwing disciplines in addition to Mohammed Abrar who won the B javelin on his debut for the club.

Other athletes who impressed on their club track debuts included Adam Peacock who recorded a promising 4:12 for third place in the 1,500m A race, Jack Morley who ran his first ever steeplechase and was fourth in the A race and Callum Smith who guested in the 800m, recording 2:09 and showing promise of things to come for the club.

One of the club’s more established athletes – James Adie – won the B 3,000m, which was the only event in which the club achieved both A and B wins.

Tamara Ball was the club’s outstanding athlete in the women’s middle distance events as she recording second and third places in the 800m and 1,500m respectively.

Ball was well supported by Izzy Billau who won the B 1,500m in addition to placing second in the 200m.

The penultimate league fixture for the club takes place on July 6 at Leicester where B&R require a strong turnout to consolidate their promotion push.
