Boars urged to build on winning start to season

BOARS director of rugby Dan Protherough says his side will have to go one better and improve again, when taking on Sandbach this Saturday (3pm).

A brace for Drew Harper and tries for George Amphlett, Josh Holt, Tom Sadler and Tom Millen helped Bromsgrove earn a fine 49-5 victory over Peterborough Lions on their return to the Midlands Premier after three years away.

Protherough admitted he was surprised by the lack of quality from the visitors at Finstall Park, but was nonetheless happy to put points on the board from the start.

“It was a really pleasing start with a win in a higher league,” he said.

“Peterborough were not particularly strong, they’ve lost a few players over the summer, but it was important to start life in Midlands Premier with a win.”

“We’ve still got plenty of work to do and areas to get better in, the pleasing thing for me is that all of us – the players and coaches – are always trying to improve.”

The returning Holt was one player singled out for particular praise, described by Protherough as having “the bit between his teeth” and showing “last years form after coming back from injury”.

But the Bromsgrove director of rugby is wary of the greater challenge awaiting them in week two, and said: “We’ll have to be better,

“The tricky thing with a big win like that is to guard against complacency.

“Sandbach had a good win away at Broadstreet, so we’ll need to up the ante and intensity on Saturday.”
