BROMSGROVE Rugby Club ousted Bromsgrove Sporting in the annual cricket match held at Bromsgrove Cricket Club, winning by just two runs.

Swapping their usual fields for a bat and ball, the Boars batted first and made a solid start, before Liam Spink caught Crusaders player Marc Cornelius for five.

Will Colson and James Martin struck 30 each, whilst George Amphlett hit 29 to build the Boars’ run count.

Jono Brown, notorious for being good at using his hands between the sticks for the Rouslers, also proved effective when bowling towards the wicket – claiming two dismissals and keeping the Boars’ total down to 128 from 18 overs.

Liam Spink and Jason Cowley struck up a 32-run partnership before Cowley – heading for League Two football at Stevenage – was also made to depart when dismissed by Martin for 12.

Spink followed after hitting 32, whilst his brother Ryan – going unbeaten with 44, alongside Tony Potter, kept up Sporting’s run chase.

Sporting looked to be closing in on another victory, as has been the case for the majority of their promotion-winning season, when Tom Rankin stepped in at the crease – bringing the Rouslers to within five runs of a win in the last over.

They took three runs from the first two balls prior to Ed Spalding bowling Rankin with the last ball, handing the Boars their latest victory to date.
