Bad start to life in top flight for Green

BARNT Green Tennis Club’s A team were given a rude awakening to life in Division One of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter Tennis League as they suffered a 4-0 defeat to Bewdley A.

First pair of Paul Cowie and James Flynn put up a valiant efforts before losing their two matches closely.

But Chris Linsell and James Hodges gave the scorers little work to do to leave the team bracing themselves for another tough year ahead.

Meanwhile, the C Team ground out a winning draw against Hagley B to get their division 11 season off to a solid, if unspectacular, start.

Tim Clipsham and Dave Harris proved to be a reliable combination by winning both of their matches without breaking sweat, but a lack of killer instinct proved to be the undoing of Dave Llewellyn and Edward Cooke as they lost both matches despite serving for the match.

The Seconds recorded a 3-1 victory over Pershore A on Sunday thanks mainly to first pairing of Martyn Langston and Andrew Yair who played with solid assurance to secure two comfortable victories.

In the other pairing, debutant Will Scarle showed great promise under the wing of wily veteran Paul Gordon to win a close first match in three sets. But they lost the second rubber to a solid first Pershore pair to complete the first weekend of the winter season at Barnt Green.
