Avoncroft's indifferent season continues

Ben Tyler 24th Jul, 2019

AN UNBEATEN stand by Old Vigornians’ Chris Drew condemned Avoncroft to a four-wicket defeat in Worcestershire County League Division Three.

After being dismissed for a lowly 146 total, the hosts were able to fire their way to victory after 32 overs, as The Croft’s indifferent form continues.

The visitors batted first after OV elected to field, though the opening partnership of 66 between Jonty Heslop (23) and Josh Cound (36) seemed to indicate that Avoncroft were set for a good afternoon at the crease.

However, both were dismissed in the space of three balls, a moment that the visitors were unable to recover from during the remainder of the innings.

Mark Whitehead (15), Anthony Ogley (14) and Ben Warwick (11) were the only batsmen in the top-to-middle order to register double figure totals, as The Croft were skittled out at regular intervals by prolific bowler Alex Parker (5-26).

After slipping to 118-9, tailender Jonathan Hunter (17no) put on a stand of 28 with Christopher Ward (7) to push the visitors towards their final total.

With Old Vigornians now batting, bowler Hunter (3-17) dismissed opener Henry Armstrong (4), followed by Joe Sullivan (6) and James Bader (0) – who was trapped lbw.

With the hosts on a 42-3 score, number five Duncan Hughes (30) and Drew (69no) smashed 70 between them to take Vigornians over the century mark.

Drew continued to find runs on a regular basis after Hughes was bowled by Mark Whitehead (3-37), despite losing middle order batting partners Alistair Robb (11) and Charles Lamb (0) to the bowler in quick succession.

Pairing up with number eight Alex Parker (7), the duo were able to hit 21 runs carry their side to victory.

Avoncroft go up against fifth-placed Barnards Green Seconds on Saturday (1pm), a side that The Croft claimed a winning draw over last time out.
