AVONCROFT slumped to their fourth defeat of the season in Division Three of the Worcestershire County League after Ross-on-Wye claimed a four-wicket victory.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Ross-on-Wye took little time in removing Avoncroft’s opening batsmen and looked to be in a strong position after reducing the home side to 130-8.

However, a strong and spirited performance from captain Craig Hughes steadied the ship for Avoncroft as his 89 not out off 82 balls pushed the score along before his side were bowled out for 231 in the 42nd over.

Harry Porter (3-46) and Harry King (2-56) got the pick of the wickets for Ross-on-Wye who reached a score of 235-6 in the 40th over to claim victory.

Opening batsman James Tiffen (82) top scored for the visitors with Harry King (27 no) and Graham Howls (23) also contributing well with the bat.

Avoncroft Seconds were also defeated as they fell to a three-wicket loss at Oldswinford & Stourbridge Social.

After being put into bat, Avoncroft looked to be in a strong position after reaching 225-7 in their regulatory 50 overs.

Mark Whitehead (58) top scored for the home side while Max Jukes (37), Jason Huxley (32), Jonty Heslop (27) and George Warren (21 no) pushed the score along nicely.

In response, Oldswinford got off to a slow start after opening batsman Joe Sidaway went for a duck but Matt Watts (63) and Josh Palmer (28) steadied the ship.

Despite Jake Brigdale (7), Tom Slater (7) and Luke Sidaway (5) being quickly dismissed, Matt Sidaway’s 61 not out pushed Oldswinford towards victory as they reached 226-7 after 37 overs despite the best efforts of Mark Wood who took four wickets for 45 runs.

Avoncroft Firsts entertain Old Vigorians on Saturday while the Seconds make the trip to St Peter’s Field to take on Droitwich Spa.
