Avoncroft get off to a flier in season opener

AVONCROFT got their season off to the perfect start with a maximum 24-point win against Barnards Green Thirds in Division Three of the Worcestershire County League.

Avoncroft skipper Craig Hughes lost the toss and his side were asked to bat by the visitors.

A solid opening stand of 40 between the experienced pair of David James (23) and Paul Athey (13) was followed by a slump of wickets with four falling in the space of two overs.

Athey being followed back to the pavillion by James who was followed two balls later by skipper Hughes.




Will Sach was sent packing with the next ball.

Alex Brunt hit the hat-trick ball for four in his quick-fire 27 during a good partnership with top scorer Sam Hughes (28).


Dan Elliott (22) produced some late hitting with Avoncroft being dismissed for a below par 142.

Athey got Avoncroft off to the perfect start, bowling the visitors captain for zero followed by new signing Jonathan Hunter bowling the fellow opener shortly after.

James Bunn came into the attack and took two wickets in his first over to take out the visitors’ middle order ending with figures of 3-18.

Hunter finished with figures of 2-21 on his debut and Hughes with 1-7.

Athey was the pick of the bowlers finishing with 4-20 to wrap up the innings with Avoncroft dismissing the visitors for just 91 in 20 overs.

Avoncroft visit Bartestree & Lugwardine on Saturday.
