ATHLETICS - Bromsgrove and Redditch AC close in on promotion

BROMSGROVE and Redditch Athletic Club (BRAC) are closing in on promotion to Division One of the Birmingham Cross Country League.

The club hosted the third and penultimate Division Two race meeting having topped the standings in both of the previous two races.

BRAC were without two of their six-scoring regular athletes at Ipsley Meadows although Alex Adams stormed to victory some 15 seconds ahead of the second-placed runner.

Adams is the first BRAC athlete to win a Birmingham League race since Adrian Passey in 2003 and improved on his third place finish in race one.

And strong runs from Joe Smith (fourth), Mark Appleton (ninth), James Marshall (14th), Henry Gibbs (15th) and Patrick Mackie (29th) ensured BRAC topped the team standings for the third race in a row.

However, regular scorer Ty Adkins had to retire after lap two with a painful calf injury.

The remaining BRAC athletes to finish were: Pete Ball 36th, Mike Cowley 42nd, Nick Dale 50th, Wayne Watkins 51st, Brett Elesmore 75th, Scott Beverley 79th, Luke O’Gorman 85th, Thomas Reichow 86th, Paul West 114th, Will Noyce 121st, Ollie Wilson 128th, Mathew Clay 153rd, Calvin Scoltock 163rd, Ian Keyte 172nd and John Searle 196th.

BRAC also won the B team, masters and B team masters races to complete a clean sweep of victories.

With one race to go, BRAC are 267 points ahead of closest rivals Solihull and Small Heath and only require a top-three finish to clinch promotion to Division One next season.
