A REDNAL based brain injury charity is calling for public votes after being shortlisted for Tesco’s new grant scheme aimed at boosting health and wellbeing.

The charity, Headway Birmingham & Solihull, is in with a chance of being awarded a share of Tesco’s £5million Stronger Starts grant programme – delivered in partnership with Groundwork UK.

Through the funding, community organisations and charities can receive up to £1,500 to fund projects which provide nutritious foods and healthy activities to support physical and mental health.

Headway Birmingham & Solihull has been shortlisted via the Tesco store on New Road, Rubery and hopes to use the funds to teach its brain injured clients how to cook healthily and safely.

Funds will go towards acquiring ingredients and specialist equipment needed for those with brain injuries to participate in cookery sessions.

Julie Wedgbury, communications & fundraising manager at Headway Birmingham & Solihull, said: “We run Daily Living Skills sessions across our three brain injury hubs, designed to help those with brain injury re-learn lost skills and look after themselves better.

“Cookery forms part of this, with the focus on meal planning, shopping and cooking, ensuring clients understand the importance of kitchen hygiene and safe food storage, while acquiring the skills to cook themselves a healthy meal.”

The charity will host its sessions at its brain injury hub – Leighton House, Chapel Rise, Rednal.

“We are grateful to Tesco for this opportunity to raise greater awareness of our charity and the chance to raise funds towards these vital sessions.

“Thank you to everyone who uses their blue token to vote for us in-store,” added Julie.

Customers can cast their vote using a blue token given to them at the check-out. Voting opens in the first week of April 2024 and ends in June 2024.
