CHILDREN and young people in care will be able to get free memberships for Bromsgrove Sport and Leisure Centre, writes Oscar Bland.
It aims to reduce the barriers between children and young people participating in sport, whilst also ‘improving their mental and physical wellbeing.’
According to the NSPCC the total number of children in care has increased every year since 2010.
Department of Education figures show more than 80,000 children are in care which equates to 1 in every 10,000.
This scheme follows on from the National Community Health and Wellbeing Strategy launched earlier this year by Everyone Active which runs Bromsgrove Sport and Leisure Centre.
Lloyd Barraclough, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said: “We are immensely proud to launch this partnership in Bromsgrove District Council.
“We feel this membership will make a real difference to many young people’s lives.”
He added Everyone Active wanted to ‘provide opportunities for young people’ and ‘offer a safe space to enjoy our sports and activity’.
Bromsgrove District Councillor Michael Thompson, whose portfolio covers leisure, said: “We are committed to making activities available and affordable for all our communities.”
Those receiving the free memberships must be referred from family support teams.
