A YOUNG engineering apprentice from Bromsgrove has been named as one of the top 50 women engineers in the UK.
17-year-old Abbie Beaver became the first female trade-apprentice taken on by Kings Norton engineering firm, adi Group, when she joined last September.
Now the talented teenager has been recognised by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) after exceeding expectations in her current role.
She said: “When I first came to adi I wanted to get to grips with the working environment.
“Having completed my two-year pre-apprentice scheme, which is aimed at inspiring local GCSE students to consider a career in engineering, I’m really enjoying my job.”
The WES50, first launched in 2016, aims to address the current skills shortage facing the UK engineering industry.
It highlights the exceptional work being completed by former and current apprentices.
Elizabeth Donnelly, the chief executive officer of WES, said Abbie’s place on the list is testament to her hard work from a young age.
“Abbie has been a keen advocate and spokeswoman for women in engineering since her school days.
“Not only has she flown the flag for tomorrow’s engineers but she continues to encourage and inspire many others to get into engineering by showing off her own capabilities.”
James Sopwith, adi Group Strategic Account Director, said: “Abbie has an excellent attitude for engineering and demonstrated many of the key characteristics that have helped make adi what it is today.”
The adi Group provides young people with a platform to develop a career in engineering, regularly taking on promising pupils from North Bromsgrove High School and the wider West Midlands.
