Wychbold Swan Rescue issues plea after cygnet is prised free from grid

THE RESCUING of a cygnet which became trapped in a grid at Brockhill Pool has prompted Wychbold Swan Rescue to make a plea to people about the safety of swans.

On this occasion, the cygnet was prised free from the metal cover by the rescue team but it has also had people bringing injured swans and cygnets to its base.

Because the Wychbold centre has only just recovered from the Avian Flu pandemic, there is currently no unauthorised access there.

Many other rescue centres are not currently answering calls so Wychbold is receiving more than usual.

John Stewart from the centre said he and other volunteers could still help but has asked anyone who comes across injured birds to call first and provide as much detail as possible.

There is a fear that – because Avian Flu has not completely gone away – that after battling so hard to come through the pandemic, there would be the danger of the centre becoming reinfected.

Anyone needing help with injured swans, cygnets or other water birds should call John on 07867 672758 or the centre on 07786 434793.
