A WYCHBOLD author has had his first book published – a psychological mystery novel.
Philip Parrish wrote Game of Life which is available in ebook and paperback.
Inspired by – and giving a spiritual and historical take on – the #MeToo movement it is set in the fictional market town of Tollgate.
The book tells the story or the Porlock family which gathers on a snowbound Easter Sunday while coming to terms with the loss of their daughter and the end of an era in their hometown.
As well as being influenced by topical issues such as #MeToo, the Covid-19 lockdown and climate change, Game of Life also reflects Worcestershire – with regard to its diversity, scenery and geography.
Philip, who is married with a daughter, said: “Game of Life is about what we possess, what possesses us, and how long-repressed voices refuse to be silenced.
“The book also explores how communities experience rapid change yet leave traces of the past behind.
“The woodland, canals, industrial heritage and expansion of Wychbold and the surrounding area were all terrific creative fuel for this, as much as the big, global issues dominating the headlines.”
The vivid, claustrophobic story told by Philip explores the tension between the spiritual, natural and man-made worlds and is perfect for people who like family dramas, mystery novels and complex characters undergoing profound transformation.
Philip added: “I hope readers finish Game of Life with a greater sense of connection to the world around them, wherever they live – not just with their family, neighbours and communities, but with the past, present and future too.”
Game of Life is available here on Amazon on ebook/Kindle for £4.99 or in paperback for £8.99.
