Worcestershire's gritters covered 16,065 miles over the snowy weekend

OVER the snow-filled weekend, Worcestershire’s gritting teams clocked up 16,065 miles across the county, dispensing 1,330tonnes of salt on the roads.

The Highways fleet of 32 gritting vehicles – three were added in October – and the teams cover 1,000 miles of designated roads.

Coun Alan Amos, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “I’d like to thank our gritting teams for the fantastic job they have done clearing the county’s roads during the snow this weekend, working all hours to ensure the county’s main roads remained open for essential travel.

“This weekend their job was made even harder due to extensive flooding in many areas around the county.”

He thanked the teams for a ‘great job’ and urged motorists to drive safely to the conditions.

“Be careful on essential journey’s, even when roads have been treated.

“Please also do not try to attempt to drive through flood water.”

Over the summer months last year, various highways depots that cover the whole county were re-stocked ahead of this winter with over 11,750 tones, ready to be used

Worcestershire Highways has also been checking the county’s 1,320 grit bins to ensure they are full and ready for use when required throughout the winter.

The grit bins – so grit can be placed on the public highway and footways – are available across Worcestershire and maintained with stocks of a salt/grit mixture.

People can report any issues on the roads including their grit bins via www.worcestershire.gov.uk/reportit.

And the council’s Twitter account for roads and highways, @worcstravel, will go into ‘#GritterTwitter’ mode when the gritter and snow plough are in action, with regular update on where and when the gritters are going out.
