'We'll freeze council tax precept' - Bromsgrove Labour Group's alternative budget

BROMSGROVE Labour Group has revealed its alternative budget proposals and claims its plan would see the district council’s precept frozen.

The document has been announced ahead of tonight’s full council meeting where the budget will be discussed and district council’s portion voted on.

Labour leader, Coun Peter McDonald, said: “The proposed budget is balanced and realistic and reflects the financial situation many residents are faced with.

“Inflation is in double figures, food inflation is at 16 per cent and National Energy Action predicts the number of fuel poor households will rise from 6.7million to 8.4million from April, near double the 4.5million households in October 2021.

“For those reasons the Labour Group believes absolutely the council should not put the council tax up and add a further financial burden to our residents at such a critical time.”

He added the Labour proposal ensured all services would be unaffected and a move to bring employees, currently based in Redditch, back to Bromsgrove would save more than £128,000 over the year from cash paid to the borough council for using its premises.

“Better use of our finances will mean the setting up of doorstep engagement teams, community shop and support teams ensuring the council can support everyone in the district at a time of a cost-of-living-crisis.”
