Welcome in a strong harvest at Lickey Hills Wassail this month

Bromsgrove Editorial 11th Jan, 2025   0

THE Lickey Hills Society will be hosting their annual Wassail later in January.

This new year tradition refers to the ancient custom of visiting orchards in cider-producing regions of England, reciting incantations or spells and singing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year.W

The society’s Wassail will be performed in the Heritage Orchard on January 18, 2025. Proceedings will begin with Black Adder Morris whose members will be playing and dancing before heading over to the Community Orchard.

Once at the orchard, folks will use their instruments, pots and pans (anything to make a noise) to wake the trees from their winter slumbers and to frighten away evil spirits to help ensure a good harvest in the autumn.

Attendees should meet at the Lickey Hills Visitor Centre on Warren Lane at 4pm to partake in the festivities.

A spokesperson for the Lickey Hills Society said: “To celebrate the Community Orchard in the Lickey Hills Country Park and to ensure a good and bountiful harvest come and join the Rangers for this centuries-old tradition where we make merry and celebrate the fecundity of orchards.

“Bring a torch, your children, families and friends, warm clothes and wellies, a sense of humour, musical instruments or a pan and a wooden spoon to make a noise, your finest singing voices, and if you wish, bring a libation such as juice or cider.”

Spiced apple juice will be available. Visitors are asked to bring their own cup.
