MCDONALD’S first vegan burger – the McPlant – was officially launched at the fast food giant’s restaurants in Coventry last month and it is now available at hundreds of other branches, including Northfield.
Eager to know what it tastes like, we sent our photographer – and vegetarian – Marcus Mingins to be among the first in the country to give it a go.
He has tried numerous vegetarian and vegan burgers and wanted to see how the McDonald’s offering compared.
He said: “The burger was really good.
“It had a really nice after taste and was firmer than the regular burger.
“One thing which used to put me off eating burgers when I ate meat was the gristle that you sometimes get – obviously with this one you will not get that.
“It was really good and great for vegetarians and vegans in Coventry that they have this option available.”
The burger used in the McPlant has been co-developed with Beyond Meat® and, as well as the plant-based patty, it also features a vegan sesame bun, mustard, ketchup, vegan sauce, fresh onion, lettuce, tomato, pickles and bespoke vegan cheese.
It is cooked separately from other McDonald’s burgers and sandwiches using dedicated utensils.
Like Marcus, McDonald’s is confident the menu item will appeal to all burger lovers.
The McPlant burger is now available at more than 250 McDonalds up and down the country.
The plan is then to roll it out nationwide in 2022.
