Warning to train passengers after Network Rail places heatwave speed restrictions on services across the West Midlands

RAIL passengers across the West Midlands have been advised to check all their journey routes before travelling tomorrow, writes Sophie Nixon

There are set to be record-breaking temperatures of up to 38°C across some parts of the UK and around 34°C across Bromsgrove, Droitwich, other parts of Worcestershire and South Birmingham.

Due to this heat, the temperatures at the side of the railway track will be in excess of 50°C and Network Rail has imposed a blanket speed restriction on certain parts of the network in order to prevent damage such as buckling to the rails.

With less trains than usual running on parts of the network due to health and safety issues, trains could be at different times or there could be delays or cancellations.

Passengers have been advised to check all parts of their journey before travelling by visiting the West Midlands Railway website or National Rail Enquiries.

Richard Brooks, customer experience director for West Midlands Railway, said:

“Extreme heat causes issues on the track and we are taking sensible precautions with our service in order to keep the railway moving.

“Passengers should check their journeys before travelling.”

Travellers should also ensure they have water with them so they can keep hydrated.

“If a passenger feels ill on board they should not attempt to stop it, but instead seek help at the next station.” replied Mr Brooks.

Any passengers who are delayed on their journeys as a result of the extreme heat are encouraged to claim compensation via the Delay Repay scheme.
