VOLUNTEERS are being sought to do their bit to tackle invasive plant species when the Lickey Hills Society meets at 10am tomorrow (Saturday) to remove Himalayan Balsam from areas within the country park.
The society will meet on three Saturdays over the next six weeks at the Visitor Centre – as well as tomorrow, the others are on July 8 and July 29.
The sessions will last two hours and see attendees and members from Lickey Hills Society tackle the invasive plant which grows rapidly and can reach a height of two metres.
The plant, native to the Himalayas, was introduced to the UK as a garden plant in 1839 but can cover large areas and prevent other species from growing.
As a result, it is important to continue efforts to remove the weed.
The most effective method of removal is pulling up the plants before they flower and set seeds. The plants are shallow rooting and easy to remove.
Lickey Hills Society has advised people to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. No special equipment is required.
