TWO WORCESTERSHIRE doctors have moved to reassure residents that the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine is safe.
Dr Kathryn Cobain, Worcestershire’s director of public health, and Dr Jonathan Wells, GP and former chair of the Redditch and Bromsgrove CCG, were speaking during a Facebook Live Q&A session about Covid rates in Worcestershire, hosted by Redditch Standard editor Ross Crawford on Friday.
Since then questions have been asked about the jab after it was suspended in several European countries, including France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
The ‘ultra-cautious’ approach comes despite several high profile organisations, including the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) reiterating the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine is safe.
Concerns were raised after suggestions it could have caused blood clotting issues in people who had received the jab.
But, medical experts – including the MHRA, WHO and EMA – have all stressed there is no direct link between the two occurrences.
More than 17million people in the UK and EU have so far had the Oxford Astrazeneca vaccine and there have been 40 blood-clotting cases.
Experts also stressed that figure not too dissimilar to the figures relating to the Pfizer vaccine.
