Urgent volunteer appeal at Headway Rednal

Bromsgrove Editorial 23rd Jul, 2023   0

AN URGENT appeal has been launched to find volunteers at Rednal brain injury charity Headway, writes Lucy Belfield.

A variety of opportunites are on offer at one of the three Brain Injury Hubs or at its off-site sports and wellbeing sessions.

People can also volunteer at one of Headway’s charity shops or work behind the scenes, helping with admin in the office.

Motorists are being sought to drive the charity’s minibus and volunteers are also needed to help out at Headway events, assist with weekly fishing lessons during the summer months or train as a counsellor – a role which only needs a few hours-a-week.

The charity particularly needs volunteers to help work with ABI (Aquired Brain Injury) at its Leighton House Centre in Chapel Rise, Rednal.

This might involve making drinks, playing games, chatting to clients during break and lunch times or supporting them during sessions with writing and reading and physical help with computer work.

Bosses say Headway has something to suit all tastes and interests and the roles give people the opportunity to make new friends, give something back to their local community and undertake rewarding work.

Volunteering, suitable for those aged 16 and over, helps build people’s confidence, can look good on a CV and only takes up a few hour-a-week.

The required skills may vary according to the individual volunteering role being applied for, with training offered as needed.

Jade Foxall, ABI co-ordinator at Headway, said: “Volunteers make such a difference in our hubs, from students who are looking to gain experience before heading into the world of work, to others who may have retired but want to give something back.”

Dave Finlow has volunteered at Leighton House for several years.

He said: “I thought volunteering would be about giving back but its actually about receiving too.

“I get so much from it and I learn so much from clients too.”
