FIREFIGHTERS investigating the blaze at Birmingham City FC’s training ground in Alvechurch have found the cause.

The HWFRS investigation team have confirmed the incident was ‘accidental’ and was down to an electrical fault.

The Wast Hills training ground is ‘closed until further notice’ after the fire which broke out in the early hours of this morning.

The blaze in a single-storey unit led to the ground sustaining ‘severe damage’.

No one was injured but staff and players have been told that the facility will be closed until further notice.

The club said it was continuing to liaise with the emergency services and would make no further comment at this time.

Two crews from both Redditch and Bromsgrove Fire Stations attended, along with the aerial ladder platform from Worcester, an incident command unit  from Wyre Forest and West Midlands Fire Service crews from Kings Norton, Northfield and Highgate.

By 6.06am, crews were damping down and checking for hotspots.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way.

Firefighters remained at the scene at 8.34am with thermal image camera used on the triple extension ladder to scan for any hotspots. This was to ensure the fire did not ignite.
