TWO PEOPLE have been taken to hospital after a car hit a pedestrian and crashed through the front of Poundland in Longbridge.

The incident happened around 11.35am this morning.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent two ambulances to the scene.

The driver, who is thought to have had a medical episode at the wheel, was treated at the scene along with a woman.

Her injuries are not thought to be serious.

Both have been taken to Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A WMFS spokesperson said: “Our crews cordoned off the area and liaised with our specialist technical rescue teams to ensure the structural integrity of the building.

“Having inspected and assured the structure of the building and found it to pose no further risk to the public, our crews left the scene with our colleagues from West Midlands Ambulance Service and West Midlands Police.

“We thank the public for their patience and understanding while we dealt with this incident.”

A spokesperson from Poundland said: “While it would be wrong to speculate as to why this occurred, we’re grateful for the prompt attendance of the emergency services who’ve dealt with the incident and ensured those involved were swiftly transported to hospital.

“We wish them a speedy recovery.

“We’re not aware of any serious injuries to customers or colleagues but this was an unexpected and distressing event for all those involved.

“It goes without saying we’re offering every support to our colleagues in the store.

“The store will remain closed until we’ve assessed the damage and made the building secure.

“We obviously apologise to customers for the inconvenience.”
