Triple celebration for Justin and Helga as her cancer tumours shrink, £1,000 is raised for Macmillan and Droitwich Salt Fudge marks first anniversary

THERE was a triple celebration on Tuesday for the family business Wychbold Fudge.

As well as the Droitwich Salt Fudge’s first anniversary and £1,025 had been raised for Macmillan, Justin Bowen and Helga Peeters received the news that her inoperable brain and abdominal cancer tumours had shrank following the latest round of treatment.

After the devastating news we reported this time last year about Helga’s diagnosis, the community rallied round and enabled the firm not only to launch the fudge at the Droitwich Food Festival but also keep the business going.

Following diagnosis Helga was receiving the chemotherapy drug Kadcyla at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and state-of-the-art radiotherapy treatment called Cyber Knife at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham which initially significantly shrank the tumours in her brain as well as her abdomen.

The cancer was contained for nine months but then in March it appeared her body had become used to the treatment and the cancer began to grow again.

She started a new chemotherapy called GemCarbo and so far it has been effective in bringing the cancer under control again.

A scan last week revealed the tumours have shrank right back down again.

On Tuesday this week, ahead of the fudge’s one-year anniversary, Macmillan representatives went to Justin’s and Helga’s home to collect the donation. They were joined by two of the volunteers who had helped over the last 12 months.

And on Saturday, Helga is set to join Justin at this year’s Droitwich Food Festival.

Justin told The Standard: “It has been a roller-coaster year but we’re really happy to have passed the £1,025 mark for Macmillan and it is great Helga will be joining me for a few hours at our stall at the Droitwich Food Festival so she can thank our customers for their support over the last year.”

The Droitwich Food Festival will be officially opened by Great British Bake Off finalist Steven Bailey-Carter at 10am in the Lido Park.

He will be accompanied by MP Nigel Huddleston and will then demonstrate a range of dishes, alongside local chefs and food producers.

The festival, now in its sixth year, features 100 foodie stalls including award-winning Churchfields Ice Cream and Croome Cuisine Cheeses.

It has a strong emphasis on local produce with 90 per cent of exhibitors coming from within a 30-mile radius.

There will also be live entertainment in the bandstand and children’s entertainment.
