CHURCHES across Bromsgrove are opening their doors for visitors during this year’s Heritage Open Days to showcase the history and story behind each site.

A selection of the town’s churches will welcome all for a showcase of historical significance and to honour the communities they serve. All church visits are free.

At St Michael and All Angels’ Church in Stoke Prior on September 14 and 15 visitors can explore a comprehensive display of artefacts relating to the salt industry and John Corbett, the local canal network aiding transport of goods in the Midlands.

Christ Church in Catshill will open its doors to visitors from 10am to 4pm on September 14 and 11am to 4pm on September 15. Attendees can explore the 185-year-old church with historic links to poet A.E. Housman and scientist Alan Turing.

The church is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows and war graves. Memorial books will be on display and refreshments will be available.

St John’s Church will also welcome visitors on September 14 from 10.30am to 4pm. Those visiting can join the Friends of St John’s for a Delightful Duets Cake and Coffee Concert.

Visitors can also have a go on the organ, climb the medieval bell tower, ring the bell, build a model church, go on a treasure hunt and more.

And last, St Laurence’s Church in Alvechurch will open its doors from 10am to 4pm on September 14. The Grade II listed church, designed in part by William Butterfield, is located within one of Worcestershire’s largest enclosed churchyards.

The programme of events will include bell ringers, teddy parachute from the Bell Tower, storytelling, village school choir, dancing demonstration, Morris Dancers, Bournville sailing and boating club display, vintage cars, children’s activities, refreshments and more.

This year’s Heritage Open Days take place between September 6 and September 15 as an opportunity to celebrate the nations heritage, community and history by exploring hidden places and trying new experiences.
