Thousands sign up to summer reading challenge

Bromsgrove Editorial 21st Aug, 2022   0

YOUNG bookworms from across the county have signed up for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge with their local library.

More than 2,500 of Worcestershire’s young readers have signed up so far – 500 more than participated last year and there’s still five weeks to go.

This summer, children aged four to 11 can visit their local library to meet the Gadgeteers and to get involved in a science and innovation themed Summer Reading Challenge, presented by The Reading Agency in partnership with the Science Museum Group.

The characters – brought to life by children’s writer and illustrator Julian Beresford – use their curiosity and wonder to understand the science behind a whole range of interests, from fashion and technology to cooking and music.

Coun Marcus Hart, cabinet member for communities, said: “It is really heartening to see so many of the county’s young readers have signed up to the Summer Reading Challenge at their local library.

“As a parent myself, I can really appreciate the need for children to read for pleasure over the summer holidays, building reading skills and confidence and helping to prevent the ‘dip’ in reading skills while they are out of school.

“For the first time in two years, libraries are able to fully welcome children and families into libraries to choose their books and talk face-to-face with library staff about their reading achievements.”

Worcestershire Libraries are hosting a variety of book-themed activities throughout the holidays to encourage children to get involved with the challenge.

Library staff are on hand to help them sign up, choose their books and discuss their progress.

Children who are taking part in the challenge, can receive free materials from Worcestershire libraries and online at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk
