A MINUTE’S applause will be held before Bromsgrove Sporting’s match with Redditch United this weekend in memory of former player Thomas Rankin who tragically died, aged 26, last Sunday (March 27).

Redditch announced the shocking news of Rankin’s death last Sunday just 24 hours after he played in their match against AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

A cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

Rankin previously played for the Rouslers and helped the club win the reserves league title during his time with the club.

Sporting released a statement earlier this week which read: “We are hugely saddened by the untimely passing of Tom Rankin.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

“Tom debuted for Sporting on 13/4/2013 vs Walsall Wood as a sub. He subsequently returned for seasons 2018-19 and 2019-2020. He made 14 appearances, 5 as a sub, and scored 1 goal.”

Bromsgrove were quick to respond to the sudden news of Rankin’s death, replying to Redditch’s statement: “Devastating news, everyone’s thoughts @sportingfc are with his family at this extremely sad time. RIP Tom.”

Tributes have been pouring in for Rankin from across the football community with further tributes under discussion for tomorrow’s match at the Victoria Ground (kick-off 3pm).

It was confirmed the game would go ahead as planned after Redditch held a meeting with players and the Rankin family earlier this week.
