Mission complete for King George V CIC which is now disbanding

IT IS with mixed emotions we announce the closure of the King George V Community Interest Company.

We have achieved the targets set out in the mission statement we set six years ago –

1. To improve sporting facilities in Droitwich Spa by representing the community to enable a New 3G artificial football pitch to be built.

2. To improve the sports pavilion facilities.

3. To raise funds for the three Droitwich football clubs and the Droitwich Hockey club.

4. To support the return of netball to Droitwich Spa.

5. To increase the numbers playing active sport in Droitwich Spa.

6. To contribute to the local community.

With your continuous support Droitwich Spa is now getting a new artificial football pitch and a refurbished pavilion, and netball will be back this season thanks to all the hard work of Karen Phillips. Between all sports involved with the CIC the number of active participants has grown in excess of 200 individuals, bringing the total number of sport teams to 50.

In that time the pavilion has had –

1. Circa. £80K spent on equipment, decor and Covid 19 preparation.

2. The clubs over the years will have received around £60K by the time the CIC finishes.

3. An allocation of £1million from Wychavon District Council for the new artificial pitch and pavilion refurbishment, helped by the 2,600 signatures on a petition that you, the community, supported to Wychavon District Council.

4. Supported Wychavon Council in obtaining a grant for the pitch from the football foundation

5. £10,000 has been donated to local causes.

The spirit and generosity of our local community during this period has continually inspired us to maintain our course for these achievements.

The baton is now being handed over to the Droitwich Spa Community Football Club in the very capable hands of the stalwart of Droitwich Football for many years Wayne Oliver who we wish every continued success in completing the development with a new Stadia pitch which will enable the Droitwich Spa senior team to return to the town.

We would also like to thank Wychavon District Council, Wychavon Leisure and Droitwich Town Council for their considerable support in achieving these goals.

Once again, from the CIC Directors a massive THANK YOU to every one of you that has supported the CIC over the last six years and we look forward to seeing many of you when the work is completed in February 2022.

‘Mid Worcestershire boundary changes don’t make sense’

IN JUNE the Boundary Commission released initial proposals for redrawing the Parliamentary constituency boundaries across the country from 2023. While the general intention of the changes, to make the number of voters in each constituency more equal, is a good one, there are some anomalies in relation to our area which require a rethink.

The proposal to restrict the boundary changes in Worcestershire to the Mid-Worcestershire and Redditch constituencies misses a number of opportunities. For example, Dodderhill ward should not be moved from the Droitwich and Evesham constituency to the Redditch constituency, as suggested in the proposals.

It has no geographical links or ties to Redditch and much of it is to the west of the M5 Motorway.

The majority of the ward lies on the A38 corridor between Droitwich and Bromsgrove, with some roads (Impney Way and Impney Green) only having access to Droitwich East ward.

In addition, the proposed change in the name of our constituency from Mid-Worcestershire to Droitwich and Evesham, does not take into sufficient account the large number of villages and communities which sit outside the boundaries of the two towns.

This is essentially a rural constituency and therefore it should continue to be called Mid-Worcestershire, which better describes the total area and population involved.

‘144 bus changes will leave Rubery residents stranded in Bromsgrove’

ONCE again the 144 bus is experiencing further cutbacks, leaving anyone who works until past 7.07pm in Bromsgrove needing the bus to get home to Rubery, stuck.

This further cutback in services mean a number of people will be unable to continue working in Bromsgrove and will result in a number of people losing their jobs.

Worcestershire County Council is responsible for public transport and should have come to an agreement with the bus provider by now and in doing so keeping people in employment.

I am somewhat surprised that county councillors have kept quiet and allowed it to happen, but there again I shouldn’t be at all surprised as they do not believe in public services as they are obsessed with austerity.

I urge those who have contacted me over this and anyone affected by these cutbacks in services to contact the county council and complain.

Without people complaining there will no doubt be further cutbacks.

EDITOR’S COMMENT

CONGRATULATIONS to all the students who received their A-level and GCSE results this week.

It has been another tough year filled with disruption and – with classes needing to self-isolate and remote learning – those finishing courses have done exceptionally well to maintain their motivation to study.

Hopefully the next stage of their lives – whether it be university, A-levels, college or apprenticeships – will be much more settled, making it easier for them to fulfil their potential.

We welcome your letters…..
