Has the circus come to town?

Travellers on the B4096, Rose Hill, over the Lickey Hills could be forgiven for thinking the circus has arrived in town when, in July last year a large bright yellow marquee appeared in front of the historic frontage of the Rose and Crown Hotel in the Lickey Hills Country Park.

At the same time the area of the country park in front of the hotel was fenced off and notices put up denying public access.

Fortunately a legal public right of way exists in front of the hotel and I believe the appropriate authority was able to remedy its unlawful closure and reinstate the public’s right to use this footpath they have used for 100 years to walk up to the ornamental pools and the hills beyond.

Nevertheless the marquee and fencing, albeit now with a small gap (regularly obscured by parked vehicles) remains in place and arguably gives the impression to the visiting public that this area of the country park is for the sole use of the hotel and is no longer the primary pedestrian route to the pools and country park beyond.

Any readers who feel this marquee is inappropriate and that Birmingham City Council as manager of the Lickey Hills Country Park – an area with free public access for nearly 100 years – has exceeded its responsibility and is remiss in attempting to give this part of of the public park over to its tenant at the Rose and Crown for his exclusive use, can contact the planning department at [email protected].

Alternatively, contact the Birmingham City Council Parks Department via the complaints route on the councils website at birmingham.gov.uk/info/50172/comments_compliments_and_complaints or email to the Lickey Hills Ranger Service at [email protected] to express concerns and request the immediate removal of marquee and fences.

Appalled at personal attack on retired Labour councillor

I WAS appalled to see a personal attack by a Tory member on a retired Labour councillor in last week’s letter page.

I do not know any of the characters mentioned but I wonder what qualifies the author to declare one human being ‘superior’ to another.

During the run- up to the county council election, this is the first communication from the local Conservatives I have read.

I do not wish to read about their personal grudges with old rivals but want to hear positive solutions to the many challenges we face.

Bromsgrove deserves better.

EDITOR’S COMMENT

THE PERSON who daubed racist graffiti into the Rubery shop front needs to face justice.

The village community is rightly outraged and there is no place for such inflammatory discrimination in 2021.

After a year where everyone has pulled together – regardless of who they are or what their background is – this will make many sick to the stomach.

A community order at least is needed to they can make amends for their wrongs, along with some education.
