TEAM GB Common-wealth and European gold medallist boxer Delicious Orie paid an inspirational visit to North Bromsgrove High School.

Sheffield-based Mr Orie had just returned from training in America before heading to North Bromsgrove where he was welcomed by Year Nine students.

The young people had a question-and-answer session with him before training with the 6ft 6ins super heavyweight. They practised different boxing combinations with Mr Orie, who was joined by self-defence instructor Pete Martin.

Students will continue their sessions with Pete in the upcoming weeks at his new self-defence unit in Redditch.

Meanwhile, Mr Orie will return to a gruelling training schedule in preparation for this year’s Olympic Games in Paris.

“It was an absolute pleasure to work with some of the year nines for the Boys Move Programme,” he said.

“It was an excellent opportunity to see some great potential and even more importantly some great motivation.

“I look forward to seeing how these remarkable young lads get on with their sessions in Pete’s very capable hands.”

He added he could not wait to hear all about it in September.

“A massive thank you to North Bromsgrove for having me and to Mrs Brierley for being the driving force for all of it,” he said.

Pete added: “Positive experiences at an early age help build the foundations for an active life.

“If children and young people have experiences that feel fun and give them a sense of confidence, they’re more likely to want to be active in the future.

“Events like this are fantastic for engaging and inspiring young people.”

Year 11 student Bailey Magee also took part in the session. As 2023 England boxing national development champion, Bailey enjoyed showcasing his skills to his fellow North students and role model Mr Orie.

Bailey said: “It was so great to meet Orie and hear all about his career path as it’s my dream to become a world boxing champion.

“It’s inspiring to hear how he’s aiming to turn pro after the Olympics.”
