A TALENTED Bromsgrove runner scooped a World Championship title during Sunday’s London Marathon which returned after 889 days.
Karl Welborn, a consultant occupational therapist at Well Way Rehab Solutions, was placed seventh overall in the event and won the Abbotts Masters World Marathon Majors World Championships title – being hosted as part of the overall run – in a time of 2hrs 21mins and 36secs.
It places Karl 3rd this year on the V40 marathon rankings, one place behind Olympic Marathon runner Chris Thompson.
The day was made extra special as Karl got to share the roads of London with his daughter Kara-Rose Welborn who was selected to represent the West Midlands at the London Mini Marathon.
Kara-Rose runs for the Bromsgrove and Redditch Running Club and has also won the Worcestershire county championships in 800m this year.
People will often see Karl running around the streets of Bromsgrove or using his local gym with his Team Marathon Road teammates.
During the training for the marathon Karl won the Bedford Half Marathon, placed second in the Wrexham Half Marathon in 1hr, 7mins and 56secs, running a personal best over 5k. He was then selected for the Midlands to race in Leeds at an international / area relay.
Karl, who draws inspiration and strength from working with his clients – people who have suffered life-changing injuries, said: “I often think how lucky I am to be able to run.
“I work with individuals who struggle and fight daily to complete everyday activities.
“They are resilient and motivated.
“After a time, their attitude and spirit rubs off on you.”
Karl will now take some downtime before targeting his next marathon.
