THE NEW library at Rigby Hall Special School was officially opened by award-winning Indian storyteller Peter Chand who also helped celebrate World Book Day, writes Shivani Chaudhari.

Mr Chand was greeted by staff and pupils who were all wearing pyjamas to encourage the children to ‘read in comfort at home’.

He started the day with a storytelling session and the pupils were gripped throughout the morning by his tales.

Local childminder Yvette Bennett and some of her children also shared stories.

The library – opened at midday – was designed in December by three pupils who sat down with Sam Craig, managing director of All Play Solutions and shared their ideas.

Sam and his team dedicated the school’s half-term week last month to bring those ideas and drawings to life by painting fairytale scenes on the wall.

Among the illustrations were castles and boats.

Headteacher Tracey Smith said: “All of the children had a lot of fun around reading and have been further inspired to continue with this enthusiasm beyond World Book Day.”
