Sparkling Bromsgrove couple toast their diamond wedding anniversary

A SPARKLING Bromsgrove couple celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary yesterday (Thursday).

James Bent, who is originally from Claines, and Patricia Cooper, from Crowle, met in 1949.

James, who served on HMS Glendower on 1946 and was a divisional officer’s assistant to Prince Phillip, was taking his pride and joy motorbike for a spin and had stopped by the Chequers pub.

Pat – whose daughter Sally said was always full of mischief – lived in the cottage nextdoor and decided it would be fun to throw mud at James’ shiny bike.

Despite that, the pair hit it off and arranged a date the following Saturday at Fernhill Heath Village Hall dance.

They married at Crowle Church in 1955 and moved to Bumble Hole Lane Fockbury in 1956.

James retired in 1990 from his business in Agro Chemical crop protection and animal health and Pat was a well-known face behind the bar at the Nailers Arms in Bournheath in the 1960s and 70s.

The couple, who have two children – Ashley and Sally – and four grandchildren – Elliott, Arielle, Montana and Cooper – put their long marriage down to their ability to work as a team and share lots of laughter, growing their own vegetables and country living.

They will mark their marvellous milestone tomorrow (Saturday) with a celebratory meal at The Bell Inn, Tanworth-in-Arden, which is owned by Ashley.

They will be surrounded by all of their family, including some who were at the wedding in 1955.
